“Two over three, two over one and four over three, two over three….” After last Wednesday night I was sure I’d be repeating this mantra forever. Now I’m just using a slight more confident “la le la, la le la, la le la…” which translates perfectly, obviously.

Why on earth have I been reciting these seemingly random numbers? Well, Sue, one of our lovely Stitched Up ladies, has been teaching a few of us bobbin lace making. I’ve learned whole stitch, twisted whole stitch and half-stitch, which you can see (in that order) in my very first go above.

I’ve found this new craft completely different to anything else I’ve tried before. The technique doesn’t feel familiar like sewing and embroidery or knitting and crochet and so I’m needing to concentrate much more. No free-wheeling I guess until I’m more accustomed. There’s instant gratification though because it doesn’t seem take to take too long until you get results.

The other lovely thing about this craft is that the tools are so pretty, the bobbins (I’m easily pleased with such things).

Sue is brilliant at most crafts and bobbin lace is no exception. You can see some of her beautiful lace creations on her blog, Travel Fibre and Thread. Over the next few weeks she’ll be teaching us more patterns and hopefully we’ll get to the point of creating something really beautiful. Already I have grand ideas of butterflies and flowers. My buddy Claire has been learning with Sue too and is ahead of me onto the next stages. She’s written about it on her blog over at Pinky and Boo.

It seems that bobbin lace making is going to be taking Stitched Up by storm so we’ll post piccies over on our craft group blog soon!
